Haiti gold

Since January 2008, Newmont has entered into various joint ventures with Eurasian Minerals (Newmont-EMX) to conduct mineral exploration, not mining, in northern Haiti’s Massif du Nord geologic province.
For more than four years, Newmont-EMX’s exploration efforts have been limited to reconnaissance surface exploration – an early exploration stage involving above-ground activities that include soil and rock sampling, geologic mapping and airborne geophysical surveys.

As a result of the reconnaissance program, Newmont-EMX has identified several areas of interest that warrant more advanced exploration including core drilling. Drilling – a common method of retrieving a small diameter sample of rock at depth for geologic and analytical studies – is necessary to test for potential mineralization at depths beneath the layers of soil and rock.

In early 2012, Newmont-EMX and the government of Haiti signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which allows drilling beneath
the ground surface on certain projects. The MOU also requires good
faith efforts from both parties to formalize the Mining Convention, which
is required prior to granting the Research Permits.

An exploration core drilling program commenced in April 2012 at the La Miel Designated Project’s Savane La Place gold prospect. This program will analyze core samples to further assess the potential of the deposit and whether it warrants further investment.  Typical exploration drilling programs last several years prior to advancing to the point of preparing the initial feasibility assessments. For a successful project, these assessments typically last four to six years prior to advancing the project to the development stage including environmental and social baseline studies, and then another two to three years of construction before mining activities could begin.
Since commencing activities in Haiti, Newmont-EMX has consistently demonstrated its commitment to operate in strict accordance with Haitian law and uphold the highest ethical, environmental and social standards.
Newmont funds and manages  exploration of six joint venture projects in northern Haiti, which include:
• La Miel Venture (including the Savane La Place & Grand Savane prospects)
• La Mine Venture
• North-Central Haiti Venture (including the Mapou project)
• Northwest Haiti Venture (including the Terre Neuve and La Montagne projects)
• Northeast Haiti Venture
• Grand Bois Surrounding Property Venture
o In April 2012, Newmont relinquished its interest in the Grand Bois Research Permit to EMX, but Newmont still retains its exploration interest and will continue to fund and manage exploration work in the Designated Project surrounding the Research Permit.

Since 2008, the Newmont-EMX exploration team has invested more than US$335,000 in direct community contributions and benefits. At the corporate level, Newmont has directly and indirectly donated more than US$2.3 million in the same timeframe, predominantly for earthquake relief efforts. La Miel Project road improvement crew     Jobs and Economic Development
The majority of Newmont-EMX’s investment in Haiti since 2008 has gone toward Haitian salaries and the purchasing of local goods and services.
To spread employment and training opportunities to as many people as possible, Newmont-EMX has directly employed more than 12,000 Haitians on a temporary rotational basis from the local communities near the exploration projects, as well as 80 full-time Haitian staff and contractors. Combined, the total Haitian payroll since 2008 is in excess of US$4 million.
Critical Infrastructure
In addition to the investment in road improvement projects and the construction of Haiti’s first suspension bridge, Pont Elizabeth, Newmont-EMX has supported the construction of local schools in the communities near our projects.     La Montagne School Construction
Donated medical equipment to Cerca La Source     Health Care
In partnership with Project C.U.R.E, Newmont donates critical medical equipment and supplies to hospitals and medical centers in Haiti that provide services to more than 200,000 citizens. The value of the supplies donated by the partnership is more than US$900,000.
Newmont-EMX also funds multiple cholera relief programs.
Earthquake Relief
Newmont contributions to earthquake relief include:
Employee donations of nearly US$100,000 following the earthquake. In addition to double-matching employee contributions, Newmont made a US$1 million cash donation toward earthquake relief efforts.
The company donated US$160,000 to The Road to Hope, a nonprofit organization working to build an orphanage, medical clinic and school in Arcahaie, Haiti.
