Thanks for being such a great Dad 1452, Leonardo da Vinci Polymath Born: April 15, 1452, Anchiano, Italy Died: May 2, 1519, Château du Clos Lucé, Amboise, France; Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived. 1473. Nicolaus Copernicus was born in Frombork Poland on February 19, 1473. died on May 24, 1543, in Frombork, Poland He was the son of Niklas Koppernigk and Barbara Watzenrode. Between 1491 and 1494 he entered the University of Krakow motivated by his uncle. However, in 1496 he moved to the University of Bologna where he pursued careers in law, medicine, Greek, philosophy and at the same time worked as an assistant of the well-known astronomer Domenico da Novara. At the end of 1499, Copernicus graduated from the University of Bologna and traveled to Rome at the beginning of 1500, where he took a science and astronomy course in which he acquired many skills that will help him later on for the formulation of his theories. Copernicus returned to his native country in 1501 to be appointed canon of the cathedral of Frauenburg, position conceived with the help of his uncle Lucas. Despite having this position, the astronomer was always motivated to complement his studies, so he again traveled to Italy to do complementary studies of law and medicine in the city of Padua, also making a pass through Ferrara where he obtained the title of doctor in canon law in the year 1503. Around 1523, Copernicus settled definitively in his native country, where he dedicated his time to the administration of the Diocese of Warmia, managed to work as a doctor, performed some administrative positions and began the development of his great field work of astronomy. Nicolaus Copernicus in his career and life managed to make great contributions to science and astronomy among which stand out: THE HELIOCENTRIC THEORY In 1536, Copernicus had almost finished his work on this theory and rumors were already heard throughout Europe about the reason why he had to expedite the completion of his work to start publishing it from different parts of the continent. Despite this pressure, Copernicus delayed a bit the publication of his work for fear of criticism from various groups. In his theory, Copernicus stated a series of ideas, which explained the conception of the universe: The celestial movements are uniform, circular, eternal or are formed by several cycles. The central location of the universe is close to the sun. The celestial bodies rotate around the sun in orbitals and in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Uranus and Neptune were not known at that time. Stars are distant objects that are still, so they do not rotate around the sun. The earth performs three movements: the rotation that it does daily, the annual translation and the annual inclination of its axis. The retrograde movement made by the other planets of the solar system is explained by the movement of the earth. The distance between the sun and the earth is small compared to the distance between the sun and the stars. ON THE REVOLUTIONS OF HEAVENLY SPHERES This was the greatest work that Nicolaus Copernicus could create in his life and was written between 1507 and 1532, were 25 years of work that the world would know in 1543 when it was published by Andreas Osiander. Copernicus had to study Pythagorean writings, Heraclides Ponticus and other philosophers which he used as a reference to analyze the problem of terrestrial movement. This work was highlighted by being divided into 6 precise and clear books: 1 Overview of the heliocentric theory, 2 and a short explanation of its conception of the world. 3 Basically theoretical, it presents the principles of spherical astronomy and a list of stars (as a basis for the arguments developed in subsequent books). 4 Dedicated mainly to the apparent movements of the sun and related phenomena. 5 Description of the moon and its orbital movements. 6 A concrete explanation of the new system. Nicolaus Copernicus would die on May 24, 1543, in Frombork, Poland. He could not see the great impact that his work has caused in humanity and science. Undoubtedly, the legacy left by Nicolaus Copernicus is unique as he is considered the pioneer of modern astronomy, as well as providing bases that served Newton to complete the astronomical revolution by passing from a geocentric universe to a heliocentric cosmos. To sum up, what is known as the Copernican revolution refers to the formulation of the Heliocentric theory, which states that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun. 1561 Sir Francis Bacon ( Born: January 22, 1561 Died: April 9, 1626, The person most credited for the "scientific method" was Sir Francis Bacon ( Born: January 22, 1561, The Strand, London, England Died: April 9, 1626, Highgate). "Without doubt we are paying for the sin of our first parents and imitating it. They wanted to be like gods; we their posterity, still more so. We create worlds. We prescribe laws to nature and lord it over her. We want to have all things as suits our fatuity (foolishness), not as fits the Divine Wisdom, not as they are found in nature. We impose the seal of our image on the creatures and works of God, we do not diligently seek to discover the seal of God on things. Therefore not undeservedly have we again fallen from our dominion over the creation; and though after the Fall of man some dominion over rebellious nature still remained ... we have for the most part forfeited by our pride, because we wanted to be like gods and follow the dictates of our own reason ..." 1564 Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaiuti de' Galilei 15 February 1564 – 8 January 1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer, sometimes described as a polymath, from Pisa. 1571 Johannes Kepler, 1571 born DECEMBER 27 Died: November 15, 1630; (see also Herschel) Johannes Kepler, : Weil der

He discovered the laws governing planetary motion and pioneered the discipline of celestial mechanics, known as Kepler's Laws, which aided Newton in his formulation of the theory of gravitation. His publishing of the ephemeris tables, necessary for plotting star movement, contributed to the theory of calculus. 1608 Evangelista Torricelli 15 October 1608 – 25 October 1647) was a Jesuati, Italian physicist, mathematician, and a student of Galileo. He is best known for his invention of the barometer, but is also known for his advances in optics and work on the method of indivisibles. 1623 Blaise Pascal June 19, 1623, Died: August 19, 1662 Clermont-Ferrand, , Paris, France a French mathematician,
physicist, inventor,
writer and Catholic theologian.

known
for "Pascal's Wager,"
which stated: "How can
anyone lose who chooses
to become a Christian?
If, when he dies, there turns out to be no God and his faith was in vain, he has lost nothing -- in fact, he has been happier in life than his non-believing friends. If, however, there is a God and a heaven and hell, then he has gained heaven and his skeptical friends will have lost everything in hell!" 1627 Robert Boyle, (born January 25, 1627, Lismore Castle, County Waterford, Ireland—died December 31, 1691, London, England), Anglo-Irish natural philosopher and theological writer, a preeminent figure of 17th-century intellectual culture. He was best known as a natural philosopher, particularly in the field of chemistry, but his scientific work covered many areas including hydrostatics, physics, medicine, earth sciences, natural history, and alchemy. 1632 Christopher Wren English architect Born: October 20, 1632, East Knoyle, United Kingdom Died: February 25, 1723, St. James's, London, United Kingdom Sir Christopher Wren PRS FRS was one of the most highly acclaimed English architects in history, as well as an anatomist, astronomer, geometer, and mathematician-physicist. 1635 Robert Hooke English scientist Born: July 28, 1635, Freshwater, United Kingdom Died: March 3, 1703, London, United Kingdom English scientist and architect, a polymath, recently called "England's Leonardo", using a microscope, the first to visualize a micro-organism. 1643, Sir Isaac Newton January 4, 1643, March 20, 1727/1726 Newton was born into a Puritan family in Woolsthorpe, a small villagein Linconshire near Grantham, on 25 December 1642 (old calendar), a fewdays short of one year after Galileo died. Isaac's father, afarmer, died two months before Isaac was born. When his mother Hannah married the 63 year old Barnabas Smith three years later and moved to her new husband's residence, Isaac was left behind with his maternal grandparents. Isaac learned to read and write from his maternal grandmother. His only true friend was Edmond Halley (see below). Sir Isaac Newton , devoted more time to the study of Scripture than to science Principia, 1687, in which he stated: “This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent Being... “All variety of created objects which represent order and life in the universe could happen only by the willful reasoning of its original Creator, whom I call the Lord God.” 1656 Edmond Halley (1656-1742) 8 November [O.S. 29 October] 1656 – 25 January 1742 [O.S. 14 January 1741]) Edmond Halley, English astronomer and mathematician who was the first to calculate the orbit of a comet later named after him. He is also noted for his role in the publication of Isaac Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica. Halley began his education at St. Paul’s School, London. He was the second Astronomer Royal in Britain, succeeding John Flamsteed in 1720. From an observatory he constructed on Saint Helena, Halley recorded a transit of Mercury across the Sun. He realised a similar transit of Venus could be used to determine the size of the Solar System. He also used his observations to expand contemporary star maps. He aided in observationally proving Isaac Newton's laws of motion, and funded the publication of Newton's influential Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica. From his September 1682 observations, he used the laws of motion to compute the periodicity of Halley's Comet in his 1705 Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets. It was named after him upon its predicted return in 1758, which he did not live to see. Beginning in 1698, he made sailing expeditions and made observations on the conditions of terrestrial magnetism. In 1718, he discovered the proper motion of the "fixed" stars. 1685 Georg Friederich Händel; 23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759; a German, later British, Baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi and organ concertos. Handel received important training in Halle and worked as a composer in Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712; he became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the great composers of the Italian Baroque and by the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition. Within fifteen years, Handel had started three commercial opera companies to supply the English nobility with Italian opera. Musicologist Winton Dean writes that his operas show that "Handel was not only a great composer; he was a dramatic genius of the first order." As Alexander's Feast (1736) was well received, Handel made a transition to English choral works. After his success with Messiah (1742) he never composed an Italian opera again. Almost blind, and having lived in England for nearly fifty years, he died in 1759, a respected and rich man. His funeral was given full state honours, and he was buried in Westminster Abbey in London. 1707 Leonhard Euler – Born: April 15, 1707, Basel, Switzerland Died: September 18, 1783, Saint Petersburg, Russia. Euler is the only mathematician to have two numbers named after him: the important Euler's number in calculus, e, approximately equal to 2.71828, and the Euler–Mascheroni constant γ (gamma) sometimes referred to as just "Euler's constant", approximately equal to 0.57721. He is commemorated by the Lutheran Church on their Calendar of Saints on 24 May—he was a devout Christian (and believer in biblical inerrancy) who wrote apologetics and argued forcefully against the prominent atheists of his time. Swiss mathematician, physicist, astronomer, geographer, logician and engineer who made important and influential discoveries in many branches of mathematics, such as infinitesimal calculus and graph theory, while also making pioneering contributions to several branches such as topology and analytic number theory. He also introduced much of the modern mathematical terminology and notation, particularly for mathematical analysis, such as the notion of a mathematical function. He is also known for his work in mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, astronomy and music theory. 1726 James Hutton 3 June 1726 – 26 March 1797 a Scottish geologist, physician, chemical manufacturer, naturalist, and experimental agriculturalist. He contributed to what was later called uniformitarianism—a fundamental principle of geology—that explains the features of the Earth's crust by means of natural processes over geologic time. 1756 Mozart January 27, 1756 Died: December 5, 1791, Salzburg, Archbishopric of Salzburg, Holy Roman Empire [now Salzburg, Austria]Vienna, Austria, Habsburg Monarchy, Holy Roman Empire [now Austria] 1732 Mozart and Haydn prayed the Rosary; March 31, 1732, Died: May 31, 1809 Rohrau, Austria, Habsburg Monarchy, Holy Roman Empire [now Lower Austria, Austria], Vienna, Austrian Empire [now Austria] 1738, William Herschel; German-born British astronomer, technical expert, and composer; Born: November 15, 1738, Hanover Died: August 25, 1822, Slough; William Herschel, German-born British astronomer, the founder of sidereal astronomy for the systematic observation of the heavens. He discovered the planet Uranus, hypothesized that nebulae are composed of stars, and developed a theory of stellar evolution. He was knighted in 1816. Sir William Herschel was an accomplished astronomer who not only contributed volumes of work that astronomers use today, but also composed some pretty hip music for his time! He was a true "do-it-yourselfer", building more than one telescope during his career. Herschel was fascinated with double stars. 1750 Caroline Herschel Born: March 16 1750 Hanover–Died:January 9 1848, Hanover William’s sister was his astronomical collaborator, a discoverer of comets and the first woman to publish with the Royal Society. 1766 John

Dalton is best
known for introducing the
atomic theory into chemistry,
and for his research into
colour blindness. John Dalton
received his early
education from his father
and from Quaker John Fletcher,
who ran a private school
in the nearby village of Pardshaw
Hall. Dalton's family was too
poor to support him for long and
he began to earn his living
at the age of ten in the service of
a wealthy local Quaker, Elihu Robinson.
It is said he began teaching at
a local school at age 12 and became
proficient in Latin at age
14.
The most
important of all Dalton's
investigations
are concerned
with the atomic theory in
chemistry; the essential
novelty of Dalton's
atomic theory is that
he provided a method of
calculating relative atomic
weights for the chemical
elements, his priority
for that crucial step
is uncontested. The idea of atoms arose in his mind
as a purely
physical
concept.
The
main points of Dalton's
atomic theory,
as it eventually
developed, are: 1.Elements
are made of
extremely small particles
called atoms. 2.Atoms
of a given element are
identical in size, mass
and other properties;
atoms of different elements
differ in size, mass and other
properties.
3.Atoms cannot be subdivided, created or destroyed. 4.Atoms of different elements combine in simple whole-number ratios to form chemical compounds. 5.In chemical reactions, atoms are combined, separated or rearranged. 1769 Jane Marcet 1 January 1769 – 28 June 1858; an innovative writer of popular, explanatory science books. She also broke new ground with Conversations on Political Economy (1816), which explains the ideas of Adam Smith, Malthus and David Ricardo. Marcet produced expository books on chemistry, botany, religion and economics under the general title "Conversations". The first written in 1805, {published 1819 16 editions in England widely plagiarised in America, appearing there in at least 23 editions } as Conversations on Natural Philosophy. Marcet's next book, Conversations on Chemistry, Intended More Especially for the Female Sex was published anonymously in 1805 and became her most popular and famous work. One of the world's greatest scientists, revolutionizing both physics and chemistry, Michael Faraday, born in 1791, read the work of Jane. He was impressed by her work on chemistry and by this it helped him to find a new calling for science and later claimed that it had played a vital role in his career as a chemist. Faraday described Jane as, “When I came to know Mrs. Marcet personally; how often I cast my thoughts backwards, delighting to connect the past and the present; how often, when sending a paper to her as a thank you offering, I thought of my first instructress.” Summarizing and popularising the work of Humphry Davy, whose lectures she attended, it was one of the first elementary science textbooks. It was accompanied by Marcet's drawings of chemical apparatus and stressed the importance of demonstration by experiment and of theoretical rigour. Jane Marcet was not explicitly identified as the author until the 12th edition appeared in 1832. The book went into 16 editions in England, where it was an early inspiration for the young Michael Faraday. It was widely plagiarised in America, appearing there in at least 23 editions. Marcet's major contribution was her work as an educator. Her works contained few original ideas, but were based on careful study of current theories and a voluminous ongoing correspondence with current scientists. Her works were noted for their precision, accuracy, and thoroughness. She presented science and economics in an informal way, but her simple introductions to often complex subjects were widely appreciated by adults as well as children. Perhaps most importantly, they reached women, including students in prominent women's seminaries, who had not been encouraged to explore the experimental sciences at that time. 1770 Beethoven Born: December 17, 1770, Died: March 26, 1827, Vienna Bonn Among the greatest of composers, Beethoven took the style and forms of the Classical era to their utmost as a vehicle for personal expression. 1778 Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet 17 December 1778 – 29 May 1829 a Cornish chemist and inventor, who is best remembered today for isolating, by using electricity, a series of elements for the first time: potassium and sodium in 1807 and calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium and boron the following year, as well as discovering the elemental nature of chlorine and iodine. Davy also studied the forces involved in these separations, inventing the new field of electrochemistry. In 1799, he experimented with nitrous oxide and was astonished at how it made him laugh, so he nicknamed it "laughing gas" and wrote about its potential anaesthetic properties in relieving pain during surgery. He also invented the Davy lamp and a very early form of arc lamp. Davy was a baronet, President of the Royal Society (PRS), Member of the Royal Irish Academy (MRIA), and Fellow of the Geological Society (FGS). Berzelius called Davy's 1806 Bakerian Lecture On Some Chemical Agencies of Electricity "one of the best memoirs which has ever enriched the theory of chemistry." 1791 Michael Faraday 22 September 1791 – 25 August 1867 an English scientist who contributed to the study of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. His main discoveries include the principles underlying electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis. Marcet personally; how often I cast my thoughts backwards, delighting to connect the past and the present; how often, when sending a paper to her as a thank you offering, I thought of my first instructress.” 1792 JohnHerschel Born:March 7, 1792, Slough Died: May 11, 1871 William’s son, is known to astronomers for completing his father’s cataloguing project for the Southern Hemisphere. English polymath, mathematician, astronomer, chemist, inventor and photographer 1807 Louis Agassiz Born: May 28, 1807, Haut-Vully, Switzerland; Died: December 14, 1873, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz was a Swiss biologist and geologist recognized as an innovative and prodigious scholar of Earth's natural history; (born , Motier, Switzerland—died , Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.), Swiss-born American naturalist, geologist, and teacher who made revolutionary contributions to the study of natural science with landmark work on glacier activity and extinct fishes. He achieved lasting fame through his innovative teaching methods, which altered the character of natural science education in the United States. 1821 James Croll, Born: January 2, 1821 Died: December 15, 1890; James Croll, FRS, was a 19th-century Scottish scientist who developed a theory of climate variability based on changes in the Earth's orbit.... en.wikipedia.org 1822 Louis Pasteur December 27, 1822, Dole, Jura Died: September 28, 1895, Marnes-la-Coquette described anaerobic (without oxygen) bacteria:

If perchance you should falter during the journey, a hand would be there to support you. If that should be wanting, God, who alone could take that hand from you, would Himself accomplish its work." 1827 Dr. Joseph Lister April 5, 1827, Upton House, West Ham, England Died: February 10, 1912, Walmer, Kent, England stated: "I am a believer in the fundamental doctrines of Christianity." "Listerine" antiseptic mouthwash was named for him. Dr. Lister told a graduating class: "It is our proud office to tend the fleshly tabernacle of the immortal spirit, and our path, if rightly followed, will be guided by unfettered truth and love unfeigned. In pursuit of this noble and holy calling I wish you all God-speed." 1837 Raphael Pumpelly (September 8, 1837 – August 10, 1923) was an American geologist and explorer. From 1870 to 1871, he conducted the geological survey of the copper region of Michigan, for which he prepared "Copper-Bearing Rocks," being part ii of volume i of the Geological Survey of Michigan (New York, 1873). He was called upon in 1871 to conduct the geological survey of Missouri, and for three years devoted his energies to that task, preparing "A Preliminary Report on the Iron Ores and Coal Fields," with an atlas, for the report of the Geological Survey of Missouri (New York, 1873). When the U. S. Geological Survey was established in 1879, Pumpelly organized the division of economic geology, and as a special agent of the Tenth Census he planned and directed the investigations on the mining industries, exclusive of the precious metals, and prepared volume xv of the Census Reports on "The Mining Industries of the United States" (Washington, 1886). From 1879-80, he conducted at Newport, Rhode Island, an elaborate investigation for the National Board of Health as to the ability of various soils to filter spores from liquids and from air. He became a resident of Newport in 1879, and lived there for 44 years. In 1879 Pumpelly introduced the idea that the numerous lakes of the Canadian Shield are the result of the creation of basins due to the stripping of an irregular mantle of weathered rock by glacier erosion. This idea was subsequently adopted by Alfred Gabriel Nathorst used it to explain the great number of lakes existing in southern Sweden. In 1881, he organized the Northern Transcontinental Survey for the Northern Pacific Railroad and published parts of his report in the Tenth Census. This survey collected information concerning the topographical and economic features of Dakota, Montana, and Washington territories. He had charge of this work until its cessation in 1884, and also edited the reports of the survey. He was appointed the Director of the U.S.
Geological
Survey, New England branch, in
1884.

He is famous for his work concerning the theory of relativity. Eddington wrote a number of articles that announced and explained Einstein's theory of general relativity to the English-speaking world. World War I severed many lines of scientific communication and new developments in German science were not well known in England. He also conducted an expedition to observe the solar eclipse of 29 May 1919 that provided one of the earliest confirmations of general relativity, and he became known for his popular expositions and interpretations of the theory. He was also a philosopher of science and a populariser of science. The Eddington limit, the natural limit to the luminosity of stars, or the radiation generated by accretion onto a compact object, is named in his honour. Around 1920, he anticipated the discovery and mechanism of nuclear fusion processes in stars, in his paper "The Internal Constitution of the Stars". At that time, the source of stellar energy was a complete mystery; Eddington was the first to correctly speculate that the source was fusion of hydrogen into helium. 1889 Edwin Powell Hubble Born: November 20, 1889, Marshfield, Missouri Died: September 28, 1953, was an American astronomer. Born in Lorain, Ohio, 23 November 1878. King's office directed the The Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942 the first U.S. air raid to strike the Japanese home islands during WWII. The mission is notable in that it was the only operation in which U.S. Army Air Forces bombers were launched from the aircraft carrier Hornet into combat. King also was responsible for taking Gualdalcanal away from the Japanese thus starting the eventual overthrow of the militant Japanese. He was also heavily involved in anything Navy such as ships and their weapons. Lieutenant General Leslie Richard Groves Jr. (17 August 1896 – 13 July 1970) was a United States Army Corps of Engineers officer who oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project, a top secret research project that developed the atomic bomb during World War II. 1912 Glenn Theodore Seaborg ( April 19, 1912 – February 25, 1999) was an American chemist whose involvement in the synthesis, discovery and investigation of ten transuranium elements earned him a share of the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. March 28, 1941, Seaborg, physicist Emilio Segrè and Berkeley chemist Joseph W. Kennedy were able to show that plutonium (then known only as element 94) was fissile, an important distinction that was crucial to the decisions made in directing Manhattan Project research. 1921 Paul R. O'Connor Born Feb 3rd 1921 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Died 2013 March in Minneapolis, Minnesota; 1945 Signed the Szilard petition. Paul R. O'Connor was a junior chemist at the University of Chicago Met Lab during the Manhattan Project as a chemist for Glenn Seaborg. Paul worked on isolating plutonium isotopes. From 1947 to 1973 Paul was a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota. After World War II, O'Connor earned his Ph.D. He helped revamp chemistry curricula in the 1960s as part of a national effort to promote national math and science education. Because of this work, he was invited to introduce the curriculum in India and spent five years there between 1964 and 1973. God

The

gestures
to her Divine
Son, directing
our attention
and adoration
to Him. This
classic pose of the
Mother of God is
known as the Hodigitria,
that is
the “Guide” or “Indicator
of the way.”
The icon combines
a dignified and restrained
realism with the
traditional symbolism
of iconography,
reminiscent
of the Moscow
school of iconography
in the nineteenth
century. The three stars on the Virgin’s mantle represent her virginity before, during and after the birth of Jesus. Although a child, Jesus is dressed as an adult, holds a scroll and blesses the beholder. The Greek letters “IC XC” are the abbreviation for “Jesus Christ”and “MP ØY” are the abbreviation for “Mother of God.” Pope Francis PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR January 2022 For educators We pray that educators may be credible witnesses, teaching fraternity rather than competition and helping the youngest and most vulnerable above all. “If Children Are

A society that
does not like to be surrounded by
children and considers them a concern,
a weight, or a risk, is a depressed society.
“When life multiplies, society is enriched, not impoverished.” Children are a gift of society, never a possession. Pope Francis ABORTION IS A MORAL OUTRAGE Marian spirituality: all are invited. 2020 0 Lord God. omnipotent, I beseech Thee by the Precious Blood of Thy divine Son Jesus that was shed in His bitter crowning with thorns, deliver the souls in purgatory, and among them all, particularly that soul which is in the greatest need of our prayers, in order that it may not long be delayed in praising Thee in Thy glory and blessing Thee for ever. Amen. In Honor of Saint Michael, In Catholic writings and traditions he acts as the defender of the Church and chief opponent of Satan, and assists people at the hour of death. A widely used "Prayer to Saint Michael" was brought into official use by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 and was recommended by Pope John Paul II in 1994. The feast day of the archangels Michael, Gabriel,
and Raphael is September
29.

In Honor of our own Guardian Angel A guardian angel is a type of angel that is assigned to protect and guide a particular person, group or nation. Belief in tutelary beings can be traced throughout all antiquity. The idea of angels that guard over people played a major role in Ancient Judaism. Our

In September, 1877, Father McGolrick left for an extended vacation in Europe, the objective point being his birth-place, Borrisokane, in County Tipperary, Ireland, where he was born on May 1, 1841. He was accompanied by four students whom he placed in the preparatory seminary at Meximieux in France to study the classics and test their vocation to the priesthood. On their arrival at night-fall they were met by Reverend Joseph Guillot, a subdeacon, and a member of the teaching staff, who mistook the youthful-looking priest for a last-minute addition to the group of students for whom they had been asked to prepare. They were given the customary evening repast and then ushered into the dormitory for the night. The next morning when Joseph Guillot went to summon the boys for Mass, he found one of them sitting on a bed, saying the breviary! A frank apology was offered and accepted in Latin-the only language common to both-and Father McGolrick was ceremoniously escorted to the chapel to say Mass, and thereafter he occupied the Bishop's room in the institution. Six years afterwards when Father Guillot came to the Diocese of St. Paul he met Father McGolrick who reminded him of the incident at Meximieux and they had a hearty laugh over it. What became of the boys? One of them, Edward McKay of DeGraff, died the following year and was buried at Meximieux; another, Edward Fallon of St. Paul, returned home at the end of his classical course. The other two were Timothy Corbett of Minneapolis, who died Bishop of Crookston, Minnesota, on July 20, 1939, and James Fitzpatrick of St. Paul, who passed away on April 30, 1901, as pastor of the Church of St. Stephen in this city. Mass, and his roots with The Basilica run deep. After he was ordained in 1952, Father Fleming was assigned as an assistant at The Basilica at a time when the pastor’s motto was, “There are those assistants trained at The Basilica and those not trained at all.” In June, Father Fleming will celebrate 60 years of ordination that include roles as assistant at The Basilica, associate pastor at St. Mary’s in Shakopee, chaplain at the women’s reformatory in Shakopee, and chaplain in the military. Father Fleming says he has been blessed to be happy in the priesthood, but his happiest, most productive time as a priest was the one year and one day that he spent in Vietnam as military chaplain. The emotions there of fear, love, and bravery were so real and tangible. He met a sergeant who laid himself on an enemy grenade in order to save his troops from harm or death. Father Fleming says that one of the best compliments that he has ever received came from a soldier who had just attended Mass shirtless because of the heat. Afterward, the soldier approached Father Fleming and said, “Chappy, you sure got your [expletive] in a sandbox today.” Father Fleming lives in the Bethany Village community in St. Paul and ministers to men recovering from substance abuse. Reverend
Leo
Tibesar;
20 years dedicated to the Preparation
of Marriage Ministery.
When
Reverend
Tibesar began celebrating
the Monday 7:00 A.M. Mass, it was held in the
sacristy. He continued when the Mass was moved
to the back of the altar, and still
presides today now that it is held in St.
Joseph Chapel. A native of the Frogtown neighborhood
in St. Paul and a graduate of St. Agnes High School,
Father Tibesar holds three degrees: philosophy and
theology, educational administration, and
library science. He has served as chaplain at the
University of St. Thomas and at the University
of Minnesota Medical Center and also as pastor of
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini in
Minneapolis.
Father Tibesar’s
work with The Basilica began in 1985
when he was involved in AIDS ministry.
Along with Father Wagner, he was instrumental
in organizing the first interfaith prayer
service for people with HIV, held at
The Basilica. Father Tibesar describes The Basilica
as a diverse parish with a wonderful worship
space. He is particularly fond of the Taizé
prayer service.HM

He says The Basilica is just the kind of parish that is needed downtown and is set up well to minister to Catholics who want to keep faith a part of daily life. Originally from Carver County, one of Father Mahon’s early assignments after ordination was to serve as associate pastor at St. Patrick’s in Edina. The other associate pastor at the time was Father John Bauer. From there, Father Mahon served at Nativity of Our Lord in St. Paul before returning to St. Patrick’s, where he then served as pastor for 28 years. On Christmas Eve this past year, Father Mahon invited someone who had been away from the church for years to attend the 4:00 P.M. Mass at The Basilica. After Mass, this person told Father Mahon that he felt like he was coming home: the music, the liturgy, and the decorations were beautiful, and the sermon felt like it was meant for him. Father Mahon is very happy in what he is doing and hopes that he can continue to help people through the Eucharist. FATHER GREGORY SKRYPEK at the Basilica of St Mary Father Skrypek celebrates the Thursday 7:00 A.M. Mass. Throughout his career, he has been connected with The Basilica. In 1969, Father Skrypek was a deacon at The Basilica prior to his ordination as a priest in 1970. He then was assigned to St. Columba in St. Paul before returning to The Basilica as an associate pastor. He served as interim administrator at The Basilica between Monsignor Berntson and Father Wagner before becoming a chaplain at the Hennepin County jail and the prison in Stillwater (20 years). ‘When Father Skrypek was assigned to live at The Basilica, he brought his things on the Saturday before the official Tuesday move-in day. Because his room wasn’t yet ready, he stored his clothes in what was then the library. His clothes were discovered by staff members who mistakenly thought they were intended for donation and gave them away. Father Skrypek said that for the next few years he kept an eye out for his clothes walking by on the street. Another story Father Skrypek tells is of a time when he and his running buddy Father Austin, returned to The Basilica from a run and discovered a group cleaning up after an event. Among the crew was “Ratso,” a community member who appeared to be volunteering in the effort. But after the cleaning was done, Ratso demanded payment for his services. Father Austin explained that there had been no arrangement for payment and that Ratso couldn’t be paid. Rarso grew angry snatched Father Austin’s keys, threw them toward the freeway and stormed off. Later, the rectory doorbell rang. A man who was sleeping under the overpass had been awakened by keys falling through the cracks and wondered if they belonged to anyone at The Basilica. Father Skrypek says that God writes straight with crooked lines. The Rev. Timothy J. Kernan, a priest who during his last 12 years as pastor at St. Adalbert's Church in St. Paul became an advocate for Asian refugees in the Frogtown neighborhood, found his final assignment both enjoying and challenging. Kernan, who died last week at age 61, knew his last duty at St. Adalbert's was daunting. It involved taking over a declining ethnic Polish Catholic parish and transforming it into one that now includes many Vietnamese, Hispanic and black parishioners, said Kernan's brother Tom Kernan of Red Wing, r.i.p.. "In
his first sermon
at St. Adalbert, he said
that either we embrace
our neighbors or we close,"
his brother said.
Kernan
closed the parish school,
which had only
13 children enrolled in
eight grades, and converted
it into a center
that provided free food
and clothing to the poor.
He helped establish an English
as a Second Language
program for Hmong children,
started masses in
Vietnamese and became a strong
voice at City Hall and other
forums for the Asian immigrant
community. He died of heart failure
at St. Mary's Home in St. Paul.
He was born in Minneapolis
and attended the Nazareth Hall
and St. Paul seminaries. He also served
other parishes in St. Paul and in Fridley
and North St. Paul. In addition
to his brother Tom, survivors
include another brother, Pat, of
Pleasanton, Calif. Visitation was
