Pope Francis releases his prayer intention for the month of November,
asking the faithful to pray that the Lord will bless him.

If Children Are Seen as a Burden, Something Is Wrong
A society that does not like to be surrounded by children and considers them a concern,
a weight, or a risk, is a depressed society.
“When life multiplies, society is enriched, not impoverished.

Children are a gift of society, never a possession. Pope Francis

1452, Leonardo da Vinci Polymath Born: April 15, 1452, Anchiano, Italy Died: May 2, 1519, Château du Clos Lucé, Amboise, France; Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived.

1473. Nicolaus Copernicus was born in Frombork Poland on February 19, 1473. died on May 24, 1543, in Frombork, Poland
He was the son of Niklas Koppernigk and Barbara Watzenrode. Between 1491 and 1494 he entered the University of Krakow motivated by his uncle. However, in 1496 he moved to the University of Bologna where he pursued careers in law, medicine, Greek, philosophy and at the same time worked as an assistant of the well-known astronomer Domenico da Novara. At the end of 1499, Copernicus graduated from the University of Bologna and traveled to Rome at the beginning of 1500, where he took a science and astronomy course in which he acquired many skills that will help him later on for the formulation of his theories.

Copernicus returned to his native country in 1501 to be appointed canon of the cathedral of Frauenburg, position conceived with the help of his uncle Lucas. Despite having this position, the astronomer was always motivated to complement his studies, so he again traveled to Italy to do complementary studies of law and medicine in the city of Padua, also making a pass through Ferrara where he obtained the title of doctor in canon law in the year 1503.

Around 1523, Copernicus settled definitively in his native country, where he dedicated his time to the administration of the Diocese of Warmia, managed to work as a doctor, performed some administrative positions and began the development of his great field work of astronomy.

Nicolaus Copernicus in his career and life managed to make great contributions to science and astronomy among which stand out:

THE HELIOCENTRIC THEORY
In 1536, Copernicus had almost finished his work on this theory and rumors were already heard throughout Europe about the reason why he had to expedite the completion of his work to start publishing it from different parts of the continent. Despite this pressure, Copernicus delayed a bit the publication of his work for fear of criticism from various groups.
In his theory, Copernicus stated a series of ideas, which explained the conception of the universe:
The celestial movements are uniform, circular, eternal or are formed by several cycles.
The central location of the universe is close to the sun.
The celestial bodies rotate around the sun in orbitals and in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Uranus and Neptune were not known at that time.
Stars are distant objects that are still, so they do not rotate around the sun.
The earth performs three movements: the rotation that it does daily, the annual translation and the annual inclination of its axis.
The retrograde movement made by the other planets of the solar system is explained by the movement of the earth.
The distance between the sun and the earth is small compared to the distance between the sun and the stars.

ON THE REVOLUTIONS OF HEAVENLY SPHERES
This was the greatest work that Nicolaus Copernicus could create in his life and was written between 1507 and 1532, were 25 years of work that the world would know in 1543 when it was published by Andreas Osiander.
Copernicus had to study Pythagorean writings, Heraclides Ponticus and other philosophers which he used as a reference to analyze the problem of terrestrial movement. This work was highlighted by being divided into 6 precise and clear books:

1 Overview of the heliocentric theory,
2 and a short explanation of its conception of the world.
3 Basically theoretical, it presents the principles of spherical astronomy and a list of stars (as a basis for the arguments developed in subsequent books).
4 Dedicated mainly to the apparent movements of the sun and related phenomena.
5 Description of the moon and its orbital movements.
6 A concrete explanation of the new system.
Nicolaus Copernicus would die on May 24, 1543, in Frombork, Poland. He could not see the great impact that his work has caused in humanity and science.

Undoubtedly, the legacy left by Nicolaus Copernicus is unique as he is considered the pioneer of modern astronomy, as well as providing bases that served Newton to complete the astronomical revolution by passing from a geocentric universe to a heliocentric cosmos.

To sum up, what is known as the Copernican revolution refers to the formulation of the Heliocentric theory, which states that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun.

1561 Sir Francis Bacon ( Born: January 22, 1561 Died: April 9, 1626,
The person most credited for the "scientific method" was Sir Francis Bacon ( Born: January 22, 1561, The Strand, London, England Died: April 9, 1626, Highgate ).
"Without doubt we are paying for the sin of our first parents and imitating it. They wanted to be like gods; we their posterity, still more so.
We create worlds. We prescribe laws to nature and lord it over her. We want to have all things as suits our fatuity (foolishness), not as fits the Divine Wisdom, not as they are found in nature.
We impose the seal of our image on the creatures and works of God, we do not diligently seek to discover the seal of God on things.
Therefore not undeservedly have we again fallen from our dominion over the creation; and though after the Fall of man some dominion over rebellious nature still remained ... we have for the most part forfeited by our pride, because we wanted to be like gods and follow the dictates of our own reason ..."

1564 Galileo di Vincenzo Bonaiuti de' Galilei  15 February 1564 – 8 January 1642) was an Italian astronomer, physicist and engineer, sometimes described as a polymath, from Pisa.

1571 Johannes Kepler, 1571 born DECEMBER 27 Died: November 15, 1630; (see also Herschel)
Johannes Kepler, : Weil der Stadt
In book five of The Harmonies of the World (1619), Kepler wrote:
"O, Almighty God, I am thinking Thy thoughts after Thee!...The die is cast; the book is written, to be read either now or by posterity, I care not which. It may be well to wait a century for a reader, as God has waited six thousand years for an observer."
He advanced Copernicus' heliocentric theory of the solar system, with the planets revolving around the sun instead of the earth.
He discovered the laws governing planetary motion and pioneered the discipline of celestial mechanics, known as Kepler's Laws, which aided Newton in his formulation of the theory of gravitation.
His publishing of the ephemeris tables, necessary for plotting star movement, contributed to the theory of calculus.

1608
Evangelista Torricelli  15 October 1608 – 25 October 1647) was a Jesuati, Italian physicist, mathematician, and a student of Galileo. He is best known for his invention of the barometer, but is also known for his advances in optics and work on the method of indivisibles.

1623 Blaise Pascal June 19, 1623, Died: August 19, 1662  Clermont-Ferrand, , Paris, France
a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and Catholic theologian. He was a child prodigy who was educated by his father;  known for "Pascal's Wager," which stated: "How can anyone lose who chooses to become a Christian?
If, when he dies, there turns out to be no God and his faith was in vain, he has lost nothing -- in fact, he has been happier in life than his non-believing friends.
If, however, there is a God and a heaven and hell, then he has gained heaven and his skeptical friends will have lost everything in hell!"

1627 Robert Boyle, (born January 25, 1627, Lismore Castle, County Waterford, Ireland—died December 31, 1691, London, England), Anglo-Irish natural philosopher and theological writer, a preeminent figure of 17th-century intellectual culture. He was best known as a natural philosopher, particularly in the field of chemistry, but his scientific work covered many areas including hydrostatics, physics, medicine, earth sciences, natural history, and alchemy.

1632 Christopher Wren English architect Born: October 20, 1632, East Knoyle, United Kingdom Died: February 25, 1723, St. James's, London, United Kingdom
Sir Christopher Wren PRS FRS was one of the most highly acclaimed English architects in history, as well as an anatomist, astronomer, geometer, and mathematician-physicist.

1635 Robert Hooke English scientist Born: July 28, 1635, Freshwater, United Kingdom Died: March 3, 1703, London, United Kingdom  English scientist and architect, a polymath, recently called "England's Leonardo", using a microscope, the first to visualize a micro-organism.

1643,  Sir Isaac Newton January 4, 1643,  March 20,
1727/1726
Newton was born into a Puritan family in Woolsthorpe, a small villagein Linconshire near Grantham, on 25 December 1642 (old calendar), a fewdays short of one year after Galileo died. Isaac's father, afarmer, died two months before Isaac was born. When his mother Hannah married the 63 year old Barnabas Smith three years later and moved to her new husband's residence, Isaac was left behind with his maternal grandparents. Isaac learned to read and write from his maternal grandmother.
His only true friend was Edmond Halley (see below).

Sir Isaac Newton , devoted more time to the study of Scripture than to science Principia, 1687, in which he stated:
“This most beautiful system of the sun, planets, and comets, could only proceed from the counsel and dominion of an intelligent Being...
“All variety of created objects which represent order and life in the universe could happen only by the willful reasoning of its original Creator, whom I call the Lord God.”

1656 Edmond Halley (1656-1742) 8 November [O.S. 29 October] 1656 25 January 1742 [O.S. 14 January 1741])
Edmond Halley, English astronomer and mathematician who was the first to calculate the orbit of a comet later named after him. He is also noted for his role in the publication of Isaac Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica.
Halley began his education at St. Paul’s School, London. He was the second Astronomer Royal in Britain, succeeding John Flamsteed in 1720. From an observatory he constructed on Saint Helena, Halley recorded a transit of Mercury across the Sun. He realised a similar transit of Venus could be used to determine the size of the Solar System. He also used his observations to expand contemporary star maps.
He aided in observationally proving Isaac Newton's laws of motion, and funded the publication of Newton's influential Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica.
From his September 1682 observations, he used the laws of motion to compute the periodicity of Halley's Comet in his 1705 Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets. It was named after him upon its predicted return in 1758, which he did not live to see.
Beginning in 1698, he made sailing expeditions and made observations on the conditions of terrestrial magnetism. In 1718, he discovered the proper motion of the "fixed" stars.

1685  Georg Friederich Händel; 23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759; a German, later British, Baroque composer who spent the bulk of his career in London, becoming well known for his operas, oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi and organ concertos. Handel received important training in Halle and worked as a composer in Hamburg and Italy before settling in London in 1712; he became a naturalised British subject in 1727. He was strongly influenced both by the great composers of the Italian Baroque and by the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition.

Within fifteen years, Handel had started three commercial opera companies to supply the English nobility with Italian opera. Musicologist Winton Dean writes that his operas show that "Handel was not only a great composer; he was a dramatic genius of the first order." As Alexander's Feast (1736) was well received, Handel made a transition to English choral works. After his success with Messiah (1742) he never composed an Italian opera again. Almost blind, and having lived in England for nearly fifty years, he died in 1759, a respected and rich man. His funeral was given full state honours, and he was buried in Westminster Abbey in London.

1707 Leonhard Euler – Born: April 15, 1707, Basel, Switzerland Died: September 18, 1783, Saint Petersburg, Russia.  Euler is the only mathematician to have two numbers named after him: the important Euler's number in calculus, e, approximately equal to 2.71828, and the Euler–Mascheroni constant γ (gamma) sometimes referred to as just "Euler's constant", approximately equal to 0.57721.
He is commemorated by the Lutheran Church on their Calendar of Saints on 24 May—he was a devout Christian (and believer in biblical inerrancy) who wrote apologetics and argued forcefully against the prominent atheists of his time.
Swiss mathematician, physicist, astronomer, geographer, logician and engineer who made important and influential discoveries in many branches of mathematics, such as infinitesimal calculus and graph theory, while also making pioneering contributions to several branches such as topology and analytic number theory. He also introduced much of the modern mathematical terminology and notation, particularly for mathematical analysis, such as the notion of a mathematical function.  He is also known for his work in mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, astronomy and music theory.

1726
James Hutton 3 June 172626 March 1797 a Scottish geologist, physician, chemical manufacturer, naturalist, and experimental agriculturalist. He contributed to what was later called uniformitarianism—a fundamental principle of geology—that explains the features of the Earth's crust by means of natural processes over geologic time.

1756 Mozart January 27, 1756 Died: December 5, 1791, Salzburg, Archbishopric of Salzburg, Holy Roman Empire [now Salzburg, Austria]Vienna, Austria, Habsburg Monarchy, Holy Roman Empire [now Austria]

1732 Mozart and Haydn prayed the Rosary;  March 31, 1732, Died: May 31, 1809 Rohrau, Austria, Habsburg Monarchy, Holy Roman Empire [now Lower Austria, Austria], Vienna, Austrian Empire [now Austria]

1738, William Herschel; German-born British astronomer, technical expert, and composer; Born: November 15, 1738, Hanover Died: August 25, 1822, Slough; William Herschel, German-born British astronomer, the founder of sidereal astronomy for the systematic observation of the heavens. He discovered the planet Uranus, hypothesized that nebulae are composed of stars, and developed a theory of stellar evolution. He was knighted in 1816.
Sir William Herschel was an accomplished astronomer who not only contributed volumes of work that astronomers use today, but also composed some pretty hip music for his time! He was a true "do-it-yourselfer", building more than one telescope during his career. Herschel was fascinated with double stars.

1750 Caroline Herschel Born: March 16 1750 HanoverDied: January 9 1848, Hanover
William’s sister was his astronomical collaborator, a discoverer of comets and the first woman to publish with the Royal Society.

1766 John Dalton   06 September 1766 – 27 July 1844) a Quaker Dissenter like Eddington however Dalton a quaker but he fell into the more christian category. Dalton is best known for introducing the atomic theory into chemistry, and for his research into colour blindness. John Dalton received his early education from his father and from Quaker John Fletcher, who ran a private school in the nearby village of Pardshaw Hall. Dalton's family was too poor to support him for long and he began to earn his living at the age of ten in the service of a wealthy local Quaker, Elihu Robinson. It is said he began teaching at a local school at age 12 and became proficient in Latin at age 14.
The most important of all Dalton's investigations are concerned with the atomic theory in chemistry; the essential novelty of Dalton's atomic theory is that he provided a method of calculating relative atomic weights for the chemical elements, his priority for that crucial step is uncontested.
The idea of atoms arose in his mind as a purely physical concept.
The main points of Dalton's atomic theory, as it eventually developed, are: 1.Elements are made of extremely small particles called atoms. 2.Atoms of a given element are identical in size, mass and other properties; atoms of different elements differ in size, mass and other properties.
3.Atoms cannot be subdivided, created or destroyed.
4.Atoms of different elements combine in simple whole-number ratios to form chemical compounds.
5.In chemical reactions, atoms are combined, separated or rearranged.

1769 Jane Marcet 1 January 1769 – 28 June 1858; an innovative writer of popular, explanatory science books. She also broke new ground with Conversations on Political Economy (1816), which explains the ideas of Adam Smith, Malthus and David Ricardo. Marcet produced expository books on chemistry, botany, religion and economics under the general title "Conversations". The first written in 1805, {published 1819 16 editions in England widely plagiarised in America, appearing there in at least 23 editions } as Conversations on Natural Philosophy. Marcet's next book, Conversations on Chemistry, Intended More Especially for the Female Sex was published anonymously in 1805 and became her most popular and famous work.

One of the world's greatest scientists, revolutionizing both physics and chemistry, Michael Faraday, born in 1791, read the work of Jane. He was impressed by her work on chemistry and by this it helped him to find a new calling for science and later claimed that it had played a vital role in his career as a chemist. Faraday described Jane as, “When I came to know Mrs. Marcet personally; how often I cast my thoughts backwards, delighting to connect the past and the present; how often, when sending a paper to her as a thank you offering, I thought of my first instructress.”
Summarizing and popularising the work of Humphry Davy, whose lectures she attended, it was one of the first elementary science textbooks. It was accompanied by Marcet's drawings of chemical apparatus and stressed the importance of demonstration by experiment and of theoretical rigour. Jane Marcet was not explicitly identified as the author until the 12th edition appeared in 1832. The book went into 16 editions in England, where it was an early inspiration for the young Michael Faraday. It was widely plagiarised in America, appearing there in at least 23 editions.

Marcet's major contribution was her work as an educator. Her works contained few original ideas, but were based on careful study of current theories and a voluminous ongoing correspondence with current scientists. Her works were noted for their precision, accuracy, and thoroughness. She presented science and economics in an informal way, but her simple introductions to often complex subjects were widely appreciated by adults as well as children. Perhaps most importantly, they reached women, including students in prominent women's seminaries, who had not been encouraged to explore the experimental sciences at that time.

1770 Beethoven Born: December 17, 1770, Died: March 26, 1827, Vienna Bonn
Among the greatest of composers, Beethoven took the style and forms of the Classical era to their utmost as a vehicle for personal expression.

1778 Sir Humphry Davy, 1st Baronet 17 December 1778 – 29 May 1829 a Cornish chemist and inventor, who is best remembered today for isolating, by using electricity, a series of elements for the first time: potassiu
m and sodium in 1807 and calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium and boron the following year, as well as discovering the elemental nature of chlorine and iodine. Davy also studied the forces involved in these separations, inventing the new field of electrochemistry.
In 1799, he experimented with nitrous oxide and was astonished at how it made him laugh, so he nicknamed it "laughing gas" and wrote about its potential anaesthetic properties in relieving pain during surgery. He also invented the Davy lamp and a very early form of arc lamp.
Davy was a baronet, President of the Royal Society (PRS), Member of the Royal Irish Academy (MRIA), and Fellow of the Geological Society (FGS). Berzelius called Davy's 1806 Bakerian Lecture On Some Chemical Agencies of Electricity "one of the best memoirs which has ever enriched the theory of chemistry."

1791
Michael Faraday 22 September 1791 – 25 August 1867 an English scientist who contributed to the study of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. His main discoveries include the principles underlying electromagnetic induction, diamagnetism and electrolysis.

1792 John Herschel Born: March 7, 1792, Slough Died: May 11, 1871
William’s son, is known to astronomers for completing his father’s cataloguing project for the Southern Hemisphere.

English polymath, mathematician, astronomer, chemist, inventor and photographer

1807 Louis Agassiz  Born: May 28, 1807, Haut-Vully, Switzerland; Died: December 14, 1873, Cambridge, Massachusetts;
Jean Louis Rodolphe Agassiz was a Swiss biologist and geologist recognized as an innovative and prodigious scholar of Earth's natural history; (born , Motier, Switzerland—died , Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S.), Swiss-born American naturalist, geologist, and teacher who made revolutionary contributions to the study of natural science with landmark work on glacier activity and extinct fishes. He achieved lasting fame through his innovative teaching methods, which altered the character of natural science education in the United States.

1821 James Croll, Born: January 2, 1821 Died: December 15, 1890; James Croll, FRS, was a 19th-century Scottish scientist who developed a theory of climate variability based on changes in the Earth's orbit.... en.wikipedia.org

1822 Louis Pasteur December 27, 1822
, Dole, Jura Died: September 28, 1895, Marnes-la-Coquette
described anaerobic (without oxygen) bacteria:
"The more I study nature, the more I stand amazed at the work of the Creator.
Into his tiniest creatures, God has placed extraordinary properties that turn them into agents of destruction of dead matter."
Rene' Vallery-Radot, The Life of Louis Pasteur, translated by Mrs. R.L. Devonshire, Vol. I, NY: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1902):

"These three things, WILL, WORK, SUCCESS, fill human existence.
WILL opens the door to success both brilliant and happy; WORK passes these doors; and at the end of the journey SUCCESS comes to crown one's efforts.
And so, my dear sisters, if your resolution is firm, your task ... is already begun; You have but to walk forward ...
If perchance you should falter during the journey, a hand would be there to support you.
If that should be wanting, God, who alone could take that hand from you, would Himself accomplish its work."

1827
Dr. Joseph Lister
April 5, 1827, Upton House, West Ham, England Died: February 10, 1912
, Walmer, Kent, England
stated: "I am a believer in the fundamental doctrines of Christianity." "Listerine" antiseptic mouthwash was named for him.
Dr. Lister told a graduating class:
"It is our proud office to tend the fleshly tabernacle of the immortal spirit, and our path, if rightly followed, will be guided by unfettered truth and love unfeigned. In pursuit of this noble and holy calling I wish you all God-speed."

1837
Raphael Pumpelly (September 8, 1837 – August 10, 1923) was an American geologist and explorer.
From 1870 to 1871, he conducted the geological survey of the copper region of Michigan, for which he prepared "Copper-Bearing Rocks," being part ii of volume i of the Geological Survey of Michigan (New York, 1873). He was called upon in 1871 to conduct the geological survey of Missouri, and for three years devoted his energies to that task, preparing "A Preliminary Report on the Iron Ores and Coal Fields," with an atlas, for the report of the Geological Survey of Missouri (New York, 1873).

When the U. S. Geological Survey was established in 1879, Pumpelly organized the division of economic geology, and as a special agent of the Tenth Census he planned and directed the investigations on the mining industries, exclusive of the precious metals, and prepared volume xv of the Census Reports on "The Mining Industries of the United States" (Washington, 1886). From 1879-80, he conducted at Newport, Rhode Island, an elaborate investigation for the National Board of Health as to the ability of various soils to filter spores from liquids and from air.
He became a resident of Newport in 1879, and lived there for 44 years.

In 1879 Pumpelly introduced the idea that the numerous lakes of the Canadian Shield are the result of the creation of basins due to the stripping of an irregular mantle of weathered rock by glacier erosion. This idea was subsequently adopted by Alfred Gabriel Nathorst used it to explain the great number of lakes existing in southern Sweden.

In 1881, he organized the Northern Transcontinental Survey for the Northern Pacific Railroad and published parts of his report in the Tenth Census. This survey collected information concerning the topographical and economic features of Dakota, Montana, and Washington territories. He had charge of this work until its cessation in 1884, and also edited the reports of the survey.
He was appointed the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey, New England branch, in 1884.

When asked "You accept the historical existence of Jesus," Einstein answered:
"Unquestionably! No one can read the Gospels without feeling the actual presence of Jesus.
His personality pulsates in every word. No myth is filled with such life."

1882  Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington December 1882 22 November 1944; a Quaker and a WWI consentious ojector, English astronomer, physicist, and mathematician of the early 20th century who did his greatest work in astrophysics.
He is famous for his work concerning the theory of relativity. Eddington wrote a number of articles that announced and explained Einstein's theory of general relativity to the English-speaking world. World War I severed many lines of scientific communication and new developments in German science were not well known in England. He also conducted an expedition to observe the solar eclipse of 29 May 1919 that provided one of the earliest confirmations of general relativity, and he became known for his popular expositions and interpretations of the theory.
He was also a philosopher of science and a populariser of science. The Eddington limit, the natural limit to the luminosity of stars, or the radiation generated by accretion onto a compact object, is named in his honour. Around 1920, he anticipated the discovery and mechanism of nuclear fusion processes in stars, in his paper "The Internal Constitution of the Stars". At that time, the source of stellar energy was a complete mystery; Eddington was the first to correctly speculate that the source was fusion of hydrogen into helium.

1894 Georges Lemaître, (born July 17, 1894, Charleroi, Belgium—died June 20, 1966, Leuven), Belgian astronomer and cosmologist who formulated the modern big-bang theory, which holds that the universe began in a cataclysmic explosion of a small, primeval “super-atom.”

1904 George Gamow (March 4, 1904 – August 19, 1968), born Georgiy Antonovich Gamov, was a Russian-American theoretical physicist and cosmologist. He was an early advocate and developer of Lemaître's Big Bang theory.

1915 Sir Fred Hoyle FRS (24 June 1915 20 August 2001) English astronomer formulated the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis.

Willis Augustus "Ching" Lee, Jr. (May 11, 1888 – August 25, 1945) was a Vice Admiral of the United States Navy during World War II. Lee commanded the American ships during the second night of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal (November 14–15, 1942) and turned back a Japanese invasion force headed for the island. The victory ended Japanese attempts to reinforce their troops on Guadalcanal, and thus marked a turning point in both the Guadalcanal Campaign and the Pacific War itself.  Willis Augustus "Ching" Lee Jr. vice admiral of the United States Navy during World War II. Ernest Joseph King 23 November 1878 - June 1956
was an American naval officer who served as Commander in Chief, United States Fleet (COMINCH) and Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) during World War II. As COMINCH-CNO, he directed the United States Navy's operations, planning, and administration and was a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was the United States Navy's second most senior officer in World War II after Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy, who served as Chief of Staff to the Commander in Chief. Born in Lorain, Ohio, 23 November 1878. King's office directed the The Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942 the first U.S. air raid to strike the Japanese home islands during WWII. The mission is notable in that it was the only operation in which U.S. Army Air Forces bombers were launched from the aircraft carrier Hornet  into combat.  King also was responsible for taking Gualdalcanal away from the Japanese thus starting the eventual overthrow of the militant Japanese.  He was also heavily involved in anything Navy such as ships, aircraft, and their weapons.

Lieutenant General Leslie Richard Groves Jr. (17 August 1896 – 13 July 1970) was a United States Army Corps of Engineers officer who oversaw the construction of the Pentagon and directed the Manhattan Project, a top secret research project that developed the atomic bomb during World War II.

1912 Glenn Theodore Seaborg ( April 19, 1912 – February 25, 1999) was an American chemist whose involvement in the synthesis, discovery and investigation of ten transuranium elements earned him a share of the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. March 28, 1941, Seaborg, physicist Emilio Segrè and Berkeley chemist Joseph W. Kennedy were able to show that plutonium (then known only as element 94) was fissile, an important distinction that was crucial to the decisions made in directing Manhattan Project research.
1921 Paul R. O'Connor Born Feb 3rd 1921 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Died 2013 March in Minneapolis, Minnesota; 1945 Signed the Szilard petition. Paul R. O'Connor was a junior chemist at the University of Chicago Met Lab during the Manhattan Project as a chemist for Glenn Seaborg. Paul worked on isolating plutonium isotopes. From 1947 to 1973 Paul was a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota. After World War II, O'Connor earned his Ph.D.
He helped revamp chemistry curricula in the 1960s as part of a national effort to promote national math and science education.
Because of this work, he was invited to introduce the curriculum in India and spent five years there between 1964 and 1973.

"Man Needs Eternity -- and Every Other Hope, for Him, Is All Too Brief"
It Makes No Sense Not To Believe In GOD
Every Christian must be a living book wherein one can read the teaching of the gospel

Narrative: The Holy Virgin gestures to her Divine Son, directing our attention and adoration to Him. This classic pose of the Mother of God is known as the Hodigitria, that is the “Guide” or “Indicator of the way.” The icon combines a dignified and restrained realism with the traditional symbolism of iconography, reminiscent of the Moscow school of iconography in the nineteenth century.
The three stars on the Virgin’s mantle represent her virginity before, during and after the birth of Jesus. Although a child, Jesus is dressed as an adult, holds a scroll and blesses the beholder. The Greek letters “IC XC” are the abbreviation for “Jesus Christ”and “MP ØY” are the abbreviation for “Mother of God.”

If Children Are Seen as a Burden, Something Is Wrong
A society that does not like to be surrounded by children and considers them a concern, a weight, or a risk, is a depressed society.
“When life multiplies, society is enriched, not impoverished.

Children are a gift of society, never a possession. Pope Francis

0 Lord God. omnipotent, I beseech Thee by the Precious Blood of Thy divine Son Jesus that was shed in His bitter crowning with thorns, deliver the souls in purgatory, and among them all, particularly that soul which is in the greatest need of our prayers, in order that it may not long be delayed in praising Thee in Thy glory and blessing Thee for ever.  Amen.
In Honor of Saint Michael, In Catholic writings and traditions he acts as the defender of the Church and chief opponent of Satan, and assists people at the hour of death. A widely used "Prayer to Saint Michael" was brought into official use by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 and was recommended by Pope John Paul II in 1994.
The feast day of the archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael is September 29.

give us this day our daily Bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

I belive in God the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in his only Son our Lord Jesus Christ, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontious Pilate, was crucified died and was buried.  He descended amoung the dead; After three days He rose from the dead, He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty from whence He will come again to judge the living and dead, and his Kingdom will have no end.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and The Son, through the Father and Son He is worshiped and glorified, and has spoken through the prophets. I believe in the Holy Spirit in one Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, the communion of saints, one baptism for remission of sins,  the resurection of the dead, and life everlasting Amen.

Rt Rev Joseph Guillot, France 2/7/1855 1/26/1953 after serving 1883 1953, these many years in Minnesota.
In September, 1877, Father McGolrick left for an extended vacation in Europe, the objective point being his birth-place, Borrisokane, in County Tipperary, Ireland, where he was born on May 1, 1841. He was accompanied by four students whom he placed in the preparatory seminary at Meximieux in France to study the classics and test their vocation to the priesthood. On their arrival at night-fall they were met by Reverend Joseph Guillot, a subdeacon, and a member of the teaching staff, who mistook the youthful-looking priest for a last-minute addition to the group of students for whom they had been asked to prepare.
They were given the customary evening repast and then ushered into the dormitory for the night.
The next morning when Joseph Guillot went to summon the boys for Mass,
he found one of them sitting on a bed,
Father McGolrick, saying his breviary!
A frank apology was offered and accepted in Latin - the only language common to both -
and Father McGolrick was ceremoniously escorted to the chapel to say Mass,
and thereafter he occupied the Bishop's room in the institution.

Six years afterwards, 1883, when Father Guillot came to the Diocese of St. Paul he met Father McGolrick who reminded him of the incident at Meximieux and they had a hearty laugh over it.
What became of the boys? One of them, Edward McKay of DeGraff, died the following year 1878 and was buried at Meximieux; another, Edward Fallon of St. Paul, returned home at the end of his classical course 1878?.
The other two were Timothy Corbett of Minneapolis, who died Bishop of Crookston, Minnesota, on July 20, 1939,
and James Fitzpatrick of St. Paul, who passed away on April 30, 1901, as pastor of the Church of St. Stephen in Minneapolis MN.

What a life well-lived: Fr. Gregory Schaffer goes home to God;  by Tom Gallagher

In 2010, I wrote a story about the heroic priestly service of Fr. Stanley Rother, who spent his life -- literally --on behalf of the Guatemalan people in a mission called Santiago Atitlán. His fellow missionary priest, Fr. Gregory Schaffer, was serving nearby San Lucas Toliman Mission. I interviewed Fr. Schaffer for the story. As the violence escalated in Guatemala, Fr. Schaffer told me that he warned Fr. Stan: "They're on the streets to get you."  In the early hours of July 28, 1981, Rother was attacked in the rectory by three men in ski masks, shot and killed. Rother's knuckles were rubbed raw by the fight. In 2007, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City opened the cause for canonization for Fr. Stanley Rother, the first for a person from Oklahoma to be considered for sainthood.

Now we learn that his good friend, Fr. Gregory Schaffer, died on May 24 at the age of 78 after a battle with lymphoma. Perhaps in time, the New Ulm, Minn., diocese will open up a cause for canonization for Fr. Gregory Schaffer, one of the great priests of our time. May he rest in God's peace.

The Star Tribune reports: Gregory Schaffer was born in St. Paul, studied at St. Paul Seminary and was ordained as a Catholic priest for the Diocese of New Ulm. But he found his true calling in Guatemala. He hadn't anticipated his appointment as a diocesan missionary there in 1963. Yet he stayed for more than four decades, leading project after project to better the lives of the Guatemalan people he loved.

Schaffer, whose caring and charisma drew thousands of Minnesota volunteers to San Lucas Toliman, died May 24 of lymphoma. He was 78. In 1963, he was assigned to the mission in San Lucas Toliman, founded by a Franciscan order in the late 16th century. His parents visited in 1965, Wiggins said. "When they came home, Dad said, 'He's never going to come back.'"

Over his decades there, Schaffer oversaw "an establishment which is mind-boggling," according to a St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity newsletter noting Schaffer's distinguished alumni award. "A parish church building, a school, a hospital, a program of agricultural education, a relentless drive for social justice implemented among the rural poor."

Jacob Cunningham met Schaffer as a 20-year-old St. Thomas student in Guatemala for a month.
"I think what he said loud and clear over and over again, was that 'It's important that you're here,'" said Cunningham, who runs a University of St. Thomas program called VISION, which organizes mission trips for students. "'However, approach this with a lot of humility, recognizing the dignity and beauty of the people.' That created the possibility in San Lucas for a kid like me from Minnesota to have a real relationship with the mission and the people."

In a way, Father Greg Schaffer, 53, was set up from the beginning to serve as a missionary priest in Latin America. But perhaps not in Venezuela.  Following in namesake’s footsteps led Minnesota priest to his own Latin American mission
The Catholic Spirit | August 22, 2018
The St. Paul native was named after his priest-uncle, Father Gregory Schaffer, who established the Diocese of New Ulm’s mission in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala. He grew up listening to his uncle’s stories whenever he came home.

He made his first trip to San Lucas in the seventh grade and couldn’t wait to go back. He recalls that at some point he met martyr-to-be, Blessed Stanley Rother, who served a nearby parish. After graduating from St. Bernard’s High School in St. Paul in 1984, he entered St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul and joined the U.S. Army Reserve to pay for college.

During a leave of absence from the St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity in St. Paul, the future priest spent two years with his uncle at the Guatemala mission from 1989 to 1991. Father Schaffer said he experienced profound peace in the midst of what was effectively a war zone. Seeing how his uncle was able to bring hope to people in such conditions gave him an image of priestly life that proved inspiring.

“That really helped solidify my vision of priesthood,” said Father Schaffer, who returned to SPS and was ordained in 1994.

Although Father Schaffer was prepared to accept whatever assignment he’d receive as an archdiocesan priest, his hope was that he’d be able to serve in Latin America — specifically Guatemala. But after serving for three years at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Maplewood, he was asked to serve at the archdiocesan mission in Venezuela.  “Without skipping a beat, I said I’d like to go to Guatemala,” he recalls. “[The bishop] told me, ‘I know you do, but you can’t.’ And that was that.”

Father Schaffer accepted the Venezuela assignment, but not without another attempt at keeping his Guatemala dream alive. When classmate Paul McGee expressed interest in serving in Venezuela, Father Schaffer went to Archbishop Harry Flynn and asked that his classmate go in his place. Instead, Archbishop Flynn sent them both. Father Schaffer has been serving in Ciudad Guayana ever since.

In Venezuela, Father Schaffer said he has had to learn to rely both on God and the people around him. “To really connect with the people and serve, you have to depend on them and listen to them,” he said.

Father Schaffer’s time in Venezuela has made him grateful for his seminary preparation, as it’s helped him work through questions that have come up in his ministry, like how to appropriately incorporate local music into the liturgy. Serving in Venezuela has also made him appreciate spiritual truths that often go unheeded in modern America — such as the dangers of witchcraft and voodoo, which are far more prevalent realities in South America. “It’s nothing to fool around with,” he said of such practices, which are part of the Santeria religion prevalent in Latin America.

Father Schaffer has served as pastor of Jesucristo Resucitado since 2000, but he recently picked up an additional assignment: vicar general of the Diocese of Ciudad Guyana. He said it’s a humbling and “surreal” experience, which included representing the diocese at last year’s meeting of Venezuela bishops. He found that talking about baseball was an easy way to make connections with the bishops, given the success of Venezuelan players like Johann Santana and Carlos Silva, both of whom once played for the Minnesota Twins.

Now in his 21st year of ministry in Ciudad Guayana, the Minnesota priest admits that he never thought he’d be in Venezuela this long. But after serving as vicar general and seeing the difficulties facing local priests, he said he can’t envision leaving now.  “It’d be really hard to go back to a nice, comfortable situation in the archdiocese, knowing the sacrifices the other priests are making here,” he said, adding that he feels obligated to help generous people back in Minnesota make a difference in Venezuela. “I have to take advantage of that while I’m able to.”

And if Father Schaffer is going to match his uncle’s feat of serving 48 years in the mission, he’ll need to continue to draw on the original inspiration he encountered in San Lucas all those years ago.
“It’s a humbling experience,” he said. “Being an instrument of God’s grace and love in the midst of all the struggles makes all the difference in the world.”

FATHER MARTIN FLEMING  Birth 22 Feb 1927  Death 19 May 2018  Memorials 〉 Region 〉 North America 〉 USA
〉 Minnesota 〉 Dakota County 〉 Mendota Heights 〉 Resurrection Cemetery 〉 Rev Fr Martin Michael Fleming

Father Fleming celebrated the Tuesday 7:00 A.M. Mass, and his roots with The Basilica run deep. After he was ordained in 1952, Father Fleming was assigned as an assistant at The Basilica at a time when the pastor’s motto was, “There are those assistants trained at The Basilica and those not trained at all.”
In June, Father Fleming celebrated 67 years of ordination that include roles as assistant 8 years at The Basilica; associate pastor at St. Mary’s in Shakopee, chaplain at the women’s reformatory in Shakopee, and chaplain in the military 1962 to 1994 --  Vietnam
(1967 one Year and one day). A helicopter flew him to the troops over 14 times in one day (Easter) to say Mass.  See below + Father Martin at 40
Father Fleming says he has been blessed to be happy in the priesthood, but his happiest, most productive time as a priest was the one year and one day that he spent in Vietnam as military chaplain.
The emotions there of fear, love, and bravery were so real and tangible. He met a sergeant who laid himself on an enemy grenade in order to save his troops from harm or death. Father Fleming says that one of the best compliments that he has ever received came from a soldier who had just attended Mass shirtless because of the heat. Afterward, the soldier approached Father Fleming and said, “Chappy, you sure got your [expletive] in a sandbox today.”
Father Fleming lived in the Bethany Village community in St. Paul and ministers to men recovering from substance abuse.

In recognition of his military service he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Vietnam Service Medal. In 1984, Chaplain Fleming was promoted to the rank of Colonel, giving him more opportunities to serve his soldiers and their families.
During his Army years, wherever Fr. Martin was stationed, he opened his home to brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends. He also showed up for family celebrations back home, wherever on earth he happened to be.

“He never lost his Irish sense of humor,” said Patricia Basel, 83, who first met Father Fleming in 1965 while she was teaching children at a military base in Fairbanks, Alaska, where Father Fleming was serving as chaplain. “He would use it sometime if there was a discussion going on and if things were not going well. He would say something that everybody laughed at.”

H.M. Father Leo Clifford 1922 – 2012 Fr. Leo Clifford, OFM, was born March 21, 1922 in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland, and was baptized Diarmuid Brendan. In 1954, Fr. Leo received permission to come to the United States. For the next 50 years, he devoted himself to preaching, chiefly retreats and days of recollection for priests and religious. Over the years, he was based at St. Francis of Assisi Friary, New York City, St. Bonaventure Friary, Paterson, N.J., and then, from 1967 to 2003, at St. Stephen of Hungary Friary, New York City, where he became a familiar figure, helping out in the parish on weekends when he was not on the road. Fr. Leo maintained his extensive European connections. In 1962, he was asked to serve as English-language secretary to Cardinal Leo Suenens of Malines-Brussels at the Second Vatican Council. After a sabbatical year in 1993, Fr. Leo formally transferred from the Franciscan Province of Ireland to Holy Name Province. Although he began to slow down his traveling in the 1990s, videos of his talks continued to be broadcast daily on the EWTN television network. In 2003, he retired to St. Anthony Residence in Boston, but continued to serve as a confessor at St. Anthony Shrine, where he had a sizeable following. In 2010, he transferred first to St. Anthony Friary, Butler, N.J., and then to Holy Name Friary, Ringwood, N.J.

He died there on Feb. 16, 2012. Fr. Leo was 89 years old, a professed friar for 69 years and a priest for 65 years.

FATHER AMBROSE MAHON R.I.,P. 2016
Father Mahon describes the people who attend noon Mass on Mondays as “good people,” often business people who are downtown and come over on their lunch break. He  says The Basilica is just the kind of parish that is needed downtown and is set up well to minister to Catholics who want to keep faith a part of daily life.
Originally from Carver County, one of Father Mahon’s early assignments after ordination was to serve as associate pastor at St. Patrick’s in Edina. The other associate pastor at the time was Father John Bauer. From there, Father Mahon served at Nativity of Our Lord in St. Paul before returning to St. Patrick’s, where he then served as pastor for 28 years.
On Christmas Eve this past year, Father Mahon invited someone who had been away from the church for years to attend the 4:00 P.M. Mass at The Basilica. After Mass, this person told Father Mahon that he felt like he was coming home: the music, the liturgy, and the decorations were beautiful, and the sermon felt like it was meant for him.
Father Mahon is very happy in what he is doing and hopes that he can continue to help people through the Eucharist.
FATHER GREGORY SKRYPEK at the Basilica of St Mary and now retired;
Father Skrypek celebrates the Thursday 7:00 A.M. Mass. Throughout his career, he has been connected with The Basilica. In 1969, Father Skrypek was a deacon at The Basilica prior to his ordination as a priest in 1970. He then was assigned to St. Columba in St. Paul before returning to The Basilica as an associate pastor. He served as interim administrator at The Basilica between Monsignor Berntson and Father Wagner before becoming a chaplain at the Hennepin County jail and the prison in Stillwater (20 years).
When Father Skrypek was assigned to live at The Basilica, he brought his things on the Saturday before the official Tuesday move-in day. Because his room wasn’t yet ready, he stored his clothes in what was then the library.  His clothes were discovered by staff members who mistakenly thought they were intended for donation and gave them away. Father Skrypek said that for the next few years he kept an eye out for his clothes walking by on the street.
Another story Father Skrypek tells is of a time when he and his running buddy Father Austin, returned to The Basilica from a run and discovered a group cleaning up after an event. Among the crew was “Ratso,” a community member who appeared to be volunteering in the effort. But after the cleaning was done, Ratso demanded payment for his services. Father Austin explained that there had been no arrangement for payment and that Ratso couldn’t be paid. Ratso grew angry snatched Father Austin’s keys, threw them toward the freeway and stormed off. Later, the rectory doorbell rang. A man who was sleeping under the overpass had been awakened by keys falling through the cracks and wondered if they belonged to anyone at The Basilica. Father Skrypek says that God writes straight with crooked lines.

The Rev. Timothy J. Kernan, a priest who during his last 12 years as pastor at St. Adalbert's Church in St. Paul became an advocate for Asian refugees in the Frogtown neighborhood, found his final assignment both enjoying and challenging.  Kernan, who died at age 61, knew his last duty at St. Adalbert's was daunting. It involved taking over a declining ethnic Polish Catholic parish and transforming it into one that now includes many Vietnamese, Hispanic and black parishioners, said Kernan's brother Tom Kernan of Red Wing, r.i.p..
"In his first sermon at St. Adalbert, he said that either we embrace our neighbors or we close," his brother said.
Kernan closed the parish school, which had only 13 children enrolled in eight grades, and converted it into a center that provided free food and clothing to the poor. He helped establish an English as a Second Language program for Hmong children, started masses in Vietnamese and became a strong voice at City Hall and other forums for the Asian immigrant community.
He died of heart failure at St. Mary's Home in St. Paul. He was born in Minneapolis and attended the Nazareth Hall and St. Paul seminaries.
He also served other parishes in St. Paul and in Fridley and North St. Paul.
In addition to his brother Tom Kernan (R.I.P.) , survivors include another brother, Pat, of Pleasanton, Calif. Visitation was held at the Bradshaw funeral home, 1078 Rice St., St. Paul. Services were held at St. Adalbert's, 265 Charles Av. St. Paul MN.

"26. 12. 1944 Croation flack has shot down near Konjic town one B 24 "Liberator " from 460th USA bomber group. Hit "Liberator" was in flame and fell down on the place called "Vrabac" _Konjic district `Herzcegovina Yugoslavia' between positions german-croatian against cavalry chetnik brigade.

In the airplane were 10 airmen, 5 of which were killed and others balled out by parachutes seriously burned by the inflamed airplane.

From 5 alive parachuted airmen 3 landed on the german-ustashi front line and were captured by Croations, and 2 other were saved from Germans and Ustashis by myself after fighting.
One of the captured B24J 460BG airmen was released after the war:  he is Lt. John H. Brueckner.

I brought them in my unit, took, care of them for 15 days, and when they were fit to march, I sent them to an English command, which was attached to Partizan in district Gacko (Hercegovina-Yugoslavia).

 These two airmen are:
   XI) Sgt Edward A Grube_39.571. 879-T43-44U3A_ APO 520 460th bombgr.
   X2) Sgt Walter Slack-14.167.196--T 42-43-USA-APO 520 460th bomb gr.

From 5 killed airmen, two were identified by the by their recognition disks, which were found on them and they are
   Xl) Millian Fyyie-39.461.376-T43-44B 460th bomb gr. U.S A.
   X2) Thomas 0. Morre_0_711002_T43_44A-460th bomb gr. U. S.A.

Remaining 3 killed airmen could not be identified because they have not recognition disks on them. All 5 killed airmen were buried on the place called Borcima, district Konjic (Hercegovina-Yugoslavia) on 28/XII/1944. I buried them together near the fallen airplane.
As Communist, a month ago, shot 14 U.S.A. airmen in Kifino Selo near Nevesinje Hercegovina*Yugoslavia  by the end of November 1944, it is therefore necessary to find out whether airmen Grube and Slack have reached their unit."

H.M. Kathy Anderson 2/12/1926 - 3/16/2012; with Andy our long time family friends
Kathryn Anderson died peacefully on March 16, 2012 at St. Luke's Hospice. In her final days she was surrounded by the love of family and friends. Kathy was born on Feb. 12, 1926 and raised her family in the Twin Cities. Kathy and Andy retired to Duluth in the 1980's.  Kathy married W.C. (Andy) Anderson on March 12, 1948. For 64 years they shared a vision of working together to create a more rational and just world. Kathy was exceptionally well read and expected thoughtful discourse. She was not willing to stop at discourse and challenged her family and friends to take positive action.

She was a dedicated mother. While her family was central to her life Kathy generously reached out to nurture other families and had an abiding concern for the welfare of all children. Kathy was a founding member of Minnetonka Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Women Against Military Madness (Twin Cities), Women Speak for a Sane World and Grandmothers for Peace (Twin Cities) She loved listening to and playing music, cards, dinner parties and fishing on her houseboat.

Kathy is survived by her husband, Andy; sons Martin (Rong) and Peter and brother Charles Sivertson.

Paul Dickson was one of the original Minnesota Vikings, but he also was a Texan, and proud of both. His Lone Star-bred intensity on the defensive line -- "We don't play football any other way in Texas," he said shortly after joining the Vikings -- could grate on teammates who had to face him in practice.  "He was ornery on the field, even in practice," recalled Jim Klobuchar, who covered Dickson and the Vikings for the Minneapolis Star in the 1960s. "It kind of offended the halfbacks, who didn't think he should be knocking them on their can in practice."  "Usually, when it's first team against first team, you're not as aggressive. But that wasn't Paul," linebacker Roy Winston added. "He upset the offensive line like crazy because he went so hard all the time."  That intensity earned him a 13-year NFL career, including 10 seasons and 129 games with the Vikings from 1961 to '70. After his retirement, Dickson remained in Minneapolis, where he died of a blood infection. He was 74.

The 1969 NFL Championship Game was the 37th and final championship game played prior to the AFL-NFL Merger. The winner of the game would go on to play in Super Bowl IV against the champion of the American Football League. The Minnesota Vikings were making their first appearance in the NFL championship game; their opponent, the Cleveland Browns, were making their second straight appearance and fourth in the 1960s. The game was played January 4, 1970 at Metropolitan Stadium, Bloomington, Minnesota.

Although not as severe as the "Ice Bowl" the weather conditions were bitterly cold with a temperature of 8 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cleveland LB Jim Houston suffered frostbite during the game and was hospitalized.

Minnesota had gone 12–2 during the regular season, including a 51–3 defeat of the Browns, and had defeated the Los Angeles Rams in the Western Conference championship a week earlier at Met Stadium. The Vikings were coached by Bud Grant and led on offense by quarterback Joe Kapp and WR Gene Washington. The defense allowed only 133 points (9.50 per game) during the regular season and was led by the front four line known as the Purple People Eaters.

Cleveland had gone 10–3–1 during regular season and had defeated the Dallas Cowboys for the Eastern Conference title. The Browns were coached by Blanton Collier.
Bill Nelsen was the starting quarterback and Gary Collins and Paul Warfield were star wide receivers for the team.
