1452, Leonardo da Vinci; April 15, 1452, Anchiano, Italy Died: May 2, 1519, Château du Clos Lucé, Amboise, France; Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who is widely considered one of the most diversely talented individuals ever to have lived.

1473. Nicolaus Copernicus born on February 19, 1473. died on May 24, 1543, in Frombork, Poland
He was the son of Niklas Koppernigk and Barbara Watzenrode. Between 1491 and 1494 he entered the University of Krakow motivated by his uncle. However, in 1496 he moved to the University of Bologna where he pursued careers in law, medicine, Greek, philosophy and at the same time worked as an assistant of the well-known astronomer Domenico da Novara. At the end of 1499, Copernicus graduated from the University of Bologna and traveled to Rome at the beginning of 1500, where he took a science and astronomy course in which he acquired many skills that will help him later on for the formulation of his theories.

Copernicus returned to his native country in 1501 to be appointed canon of the cathedral of Frauenburg, position conceived with the help of his uncle Lucas. Despite having this position, the astronomer was always motivated to complement his studies, so he again traveled to Italy to do complementary studies of law and medicine in the city of Padua, also making a pass through Ferrara where he obtained the title of doctor in canon law in the year 1503.

Around 1523, Copernicus settled definitively in his native country, where he dedicated his time to the administration of the Diocese of Warmia, managed to work as a doctor, performed some administrative positions and began the development of his great field work of astronomy.

Nicolaus Copernicus in his career and life managed to make great contributions to science and astronomy among which stand out:
THE HELIOCENTRIC THEORY
In 1536, Copernicus had almost finished his work on this theory and rumors were already heard throughout Europe about the reason why he had to expedite the completion of his work to start publishing it from different parts of the continent. Despite this pressure, Copernicus delayed a bit the publication of his work for fear of criticism from various groups.
In his theory, Copernicus stated a series of ideas, which explained the conception of the universe:
The celestial movements are uniform, circular, eternal or are formed by several cycles.
The central location of the universe is close to the sun.
The celestial bodies rotate around the sun in orbitals and in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. Uranus and Neptune were not known at that time.
Stars are distant objects that are still, so they do not rotate around the sun.
The earth performs three movements: the rotation that it does daily, the annual translation and the annual inclination of its axis.
The retrograde movement made by the other planets of the solar system is explained by the movement of the earth.
The distance between the sun and the earth is small compared to the distance between the sun and the stars.
ON THE REVOLUTIONS OF HEAVENLY SPHERES
This was the greatest work that Nicolaus Copernicus could create in his life and was written between 1507 and 1532, were 25 years of work that the world would know in 1543 when it was published by Andreas Osiander.
Copernicus had to study Pythagorean writings, Heraclides Ponticus and other philosophers which he used as a reference to analyze the problem of terrestrial movement. This work was highlighted by being divided into 6 precise and clear books:

1 Overview of the heliocentric theory,
2 and a short explanation of its conception of the world.
3 Basically theoretical, it presents the principles of spherical astronomy and a list of stars (as a basis for the arguments developed in subsequent books).
4 Dedicated mainly to the apparent movements of the sun and related phenomena.
5 Description of the moon and its orbital movements.
6 A concrete explanation of the new system.
Nicolaus Copernicus would die on May 24, 1543, in Frombork, Poland. He could not see the great impact that his work has caused in humanity and science.

Undoubtedly, the legacy left by Nicolaus Copernicus is unique as he is considered the pioneer of modern astronomy, as well as providing bases that served Newton to complete the astronomical revolution by passing from a geocentric universe to a heliocentric cosmos.

To sum up, what is known as the Copernican revolution refers to the formulation of the Heliocentric theory, which states that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun.

The person most credited for the "scientific method" was Sir Francis Bacon ( Born: January 22, 1561, The Strand, London, England Died: April 9, 1626, Highgate). "Without doubt we are paying for the sin of our first parents and imitating it. They wanted to be like gods; we their posterity, still more so.
We create worlds. We prescribe laws to nature and lord it over her. We want to have all things as suits our fatuity (foolishness), not as fits the Divine Wisdom, not as they are found in nature.
We impose the seal of our image on the creatures and works of God, we do not diligently seek to discover the seal of God on things.
Therefore not undeservedly have we again fallen from our dominion over the creation; and though after the Fall of man some dominion over rebellious nature still remained ... we have for the most part forfeited by our pride, because we wanted to be like gods and follow the dictates of our own reason ..."

1571 Johannes Kepler, DECEMBER 27 1571 – November 15, 1630 Johannes Kepler, In book five of The Harmonies of the World (1619), Kepler wrote:
"O, Almighty God, I am thinking Thy thoughts after Thee!...The die is cast; the book is written, to be read either now or by posterity, I care not which. It may be well to wait a century for a reader, as God has waited six thousand years for an observer."
He advanced Copernicus' heliocentric theory of the solar system, with the planets revolving around the sun instead of the earth.
He discovered the laws governing planetary motion and pioneered the discipline of celestial mechanics, known as Kepler's Laws, which aided Newton in his formulation of the theory of gravitation.

His publishing of the ephemeris tables, necessary for plotting star movement, contributed to the theory of calculus.

1608 Evangelista Torricelli 15 October 1608 – 25 October 1647) was a Jesuati, Italian physicist, mathematician, and a student of Galileo. He is best known for his invention of the barometer, but is also known for his advances in optics and work on the method of indivisibles.

1623 Blaise Pascal Born: June 19, 1623 Died: August 19, 1662 Blaise Pascal ; Born, Clermont-Ferrand; Died: Paris; a French mathematician, physicist, inventor, writer and Catholic theologian. He was a child prodigy who was educated by his father; known for "Pascal's Wager," which stated: "How can anyone lose who chooses to become a Christian?
If, when he dies, there turns out to be no God and his faith was in vain, he has lost nothing -- in fact, he has been happier in life than his non-believing friends.
If, however, there is a God and a heaven and hell, then he has gained heaven and his skeptical friends will have lost everything in hell!"

He was best known as a natural philosopher, particularly in the field of chemistry, but his scientific work covered many areas including hydrostatics, physics, medicine, earth sciences, natural history, and alchemy.

1632 Christopher Wren English architect Born: October 20, 1632, East Knoyle, United Kingdom Died: February 25, 1723, St. James's, London, United Kingdom; Sir Christopher Wren PRS FRS was one of the most highly acclaimed English architects in history, as well as an anatomist, astronomer, geometer, and mathematician-physicist.

Newton was born into a Puritan family in Woolsthorpe, a small villagein Linconshire near Grantham, on 25 December 1642 (old calendar), a fewdays short of one year after Galileo died. Isaac's father, a farmer, died two months before Isaac was born. When his mother Hannah married the 63 year old Barnabas Smith three years later and moved to her new husband's residence, Isaac was left behind with his maternal grandparents. Isaac learned to read and write from his maternal grandmother.
His only true friend was Edmond Halley (see below).

Edmond Halley, English astronomer and mathematician who was the first to calculate the orbit of a comet later named after him. He is also noted for his role in the publication of Isaac Newton’s Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica.
Halley began his education at St. Paul’s School, London. He was the second Astronomer Royal in Britain, succeeding John Flamsteed in 1720. From an observatory he constructed on Saint Helena, Halley recorded a transit of Mercury across the Sun. He realised a similar transit of Venus could be used to determine the size of the Solar System. He also used his observations to expand contemporary star maps.
He aided in observationally proving Isaac Newton's laws of motion, and funded the publication of Newton's influential Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica.
From his September 1682 observations, he used the laws of motion to compute the periodicity of Halley's Comet in his 1705 Synopsis of the Astronomy of Comets. It was named after him upon its predicted return in 1758, which he did not live to see.

Beginning in 1698, he made sailing expeditions and made observations on the conditions of terrestrial magnetism. In 1718, he discovered the proper motion of the "fixed" stars.

1685 Johann Sebastian Bach March 31, 1685, Eisenach Died: July 28, 1750 Leipzig & the Bible; "In devotional music, God is always present with His grace"
In 1724, Bach wrote the sacred oratorio St. John Passion, based on chapters 18 and 19 of the Gospel of John in Martin Luther's German translation of Bible.
In 1727, Bach wrote the sacred oratorio "Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the Evangelist Matthew," based on chapters 26 and 27 of Luther's Bible.
Bach's "Saint Matthew Passion" was performed in 1829 in Berlin by 20-year-old Felix Mendelssohn.
Widowed with 7 children, he remarried and had 13 more.

By age 10, both his parents had died. At 18, Bach was a church organist, then held positions in royal courts. While serving as cantor at Thomas Church of Leipzig, Bach taught Luther's Small Catechism. In 1717, Bach was imprisoned because a duke in the city of Weimar did not want him employed elsewhere. Widowed with 7 children, he remarried and had 13 more.
Johann Sebastian Bach stated: "The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul. If heed is not paid to this, it is not true music but a diabolical bawling and twanging."
Considered the "master of masters," Johann Sebastian Bach's works include: -Jesus, Meine Freude (Jesus, My Joy!); -Passion According to St. Matthew; -O Sacred Head, Now Wounded;
-Christen, ätzet diesen Tag (Christians, engrave this day); -Easter Oratorio; and -Christmas Oratorio.
Bach wrote more than 300 sacred cantatas, including: -Christ lag in Todes Banden (Christ lay in death's bonds); -Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott (A mighty fortress is our God);

In "The Story of Mankind," 1921, Hendrik Willem van Loon wrote:
"By the middle of the 18th century the musical life of Europe was in full swing.
Then there came forward a man who was greater than all others, a simple organist of the Thomas Church of Leipzig, by the name of Johann Sebastian Bach...
...In his compositions for every known instrument...to the most stately of sacred hymns and oratorios, he laid the foundation for all our modern music. When he died in the year 1750 he was succeeded by Mozart...then Ludwig van Beethoven."

Considered the "master of masters," Johann Sebastian Bach's works not only exhibit mastery of musical composition, also reveal his devout relationship with God.

1707 Leonhard Euler – Born: April 15, 1707, Basel, Switzerland Died: September 18, 1783, Saint Petersburg, Russia. Euler is the only mathematician to have two numbers named after him: the important Euler's number in calculus, e, approximately equal to 2.71828, and the Euler–Mascheroni constant γ (gamma) sometimes referred to as just "Euler's constant", approximately equal to 0.57721.
He is commemorated by the Lutheran Church on their Calendar of Saints on 24 May—he was a devout Christian (and believer in biblical inerrancy) who wrote apologetics and argued forcefully against the prominent atheists of his time.
Swiss mathematician, physicist, astronomer, geographer, logician and engineer who made important and influential discoveries in many branches of mathematics, such as infinitesimal calculus and graph theory, while also making pioneering contributions to several branches such as topology and analytic number theory. He also introduced much of the modern mathematical terminology and notation, particularly for mathematical analysis, such as the notion of a mathematical function. He is also known for his work in mechanics, fluid dynamics, optics, astronomy and music theory.

1726 James Hutton 3 June 1726 – 26 March 1797; a Scottish geologist, physician, chemical manufacturer, naturalist, and experimental agriculturalist. He contributed to what was later called uniformitarianism—a fundamental principle of geology—that explains the features of the Earth's crust by means of natural processes over geologic time.

William Herschel, German-born British astronomer, the founder of sidereal astronomy for the systematic observation of the heavens. He discovered the planet Uranus, hypothesized that nebulae are composed of stars, and developed a theory of stellar evolution. He was knighted in 1816.
Sir William Herschel was an accomplished astronomer who not only contributed volumes of work that astronomers use today, but also composed some pretty hip music for his time! He was a true "do-it-yourselfer", building more than one telescope during his career. Herschel was fascinated with double stars.

1750 Caroline Herschel Born: March 16 1750 Hanover Died: January 9 1848, Hanover

William’s sister was his astronomical collaborator, a discoverer of comets and the first woman to publish with the Royal Society.

1766 John Dalton September 6 – 27 July 1844; a Quaker Dissenter like Eddington, however Dalton fell into the more christian category. Dalton is best known for introducing the atomic theory into chemistry, and for his research into colour blindness.
John Dalton received his early education from his father and from Quaker John Fletcher, who ran a private school in the nearby village of Pardshaw Hall. Dalton's family was too poor to support him for long and he began to earn his living at the age of ten in the service of a wealthy local Quaker, Elihu Robinson. It is said he began teaching at a local school at age 12 and became proficient in Latin at age 14.
The most important of all Dalton's investigations are concerned with the atomic theory in chemistry; the essential novelty of Dalton's atomic theory is that he provided a method of calculating relative atomic weights for the chemical elements, his priority for that crucial step is uncontested. The idea of atoms arose in his mind as a purely physical concept.
The main points of Dalton's atomic theory, as it eventually developed, are: 1.Elements are made of extremely small particles called atoms. 2. Atoms of a given element are identical in size, mass and other properties; atoms of different elements differ in size, mass and other properties. 3. Atoms cannot be subdivided, created or destroyed. 4. Atoms of different elements combine in simple whole-number ratios to form chemical compounds.
5. In chemical reactions, atoms are combined, separated or rearranged.

1769 Jane Marcet 1 January 1769 – 28 June 1858; an innovative writer of popular, explanatory science books. She also broke new ground with Conversations on Political Economy (1816), which explains the ideas of Adam Smith, Malthus and David Ricardo. Marcet produced expository books on chemistry, botany, religion and economics under the general title "Conversations". The first written in 1805, {published 1819 16 editions in England widely plagiarised in America, appearing there in at least 23 editions } as Conversations on Natural Philosophy. Marcet's next book, Conversations on Chemistry, Intended More Especially for the Female Sex was published anonymously in 1805 and became her most popular and famous work. One of the world's greatest scientists, revolutionizing both physics and chemistry, Michael Faraday, born in 1791, read the work of Jane. He was impressed by her work on chemistry and by this it helped him to find a new calling for science and later claimed that it had played a vital role in his career as a chemist. Faraday described Jane as, “When I came to know Mrs. Marcet personally; how often I cast my thoughts backwards, delighting to connect the past and the present; how often, when sending a paper to her as a thank you offering, I thought of my first instructress.”
Summarizing and popularising the work of Humphry Davy, whose lectures she attended, it was one of the first elementary science textbooks. It was accompanied by Marcet's drawings of chemical apparatus and stressed the importance of demonstration by experiment and of theoretical rigour. Jane Marcet was not explicitly identified as the author until the 12th edition appeared in 1832. The book went into 16 editions in England, where it was an early inspiration for the young Michael Faraday. It was widely plagiarised in America, appearing there in at least 23 editions. Marcet's major contribution was her work as an educator. Her works contained few original ideas, but were based on careful study of current theories and a voluminous ongoing correspondence with current scientists. Her works were noted for their precision, accuracy, and thoroughness. She presented science and economics in an informal way, but her simple introductions to often complex subjects were widely appreciated by adults as well as children. Perhaps most importantly, they reached women, including students in prominent women's seminaries, who had not been encouraged to explore the experimental sciences at that time.

1827 Dr. Joseph Lister April 5, 1827 to February 10, 1912, Upton House, West Ham, England Walmer, Kent, England stated: "I am a believer in the fundamental doctrines of Christianity." "Listerine" antiseptic mouthwash was named for him.
Dr. Lister told a graduating class:
"It is our proud office to tend the fleshly tabernacle of the immortal spirit, and our path, if rightly followed,
will be guided by unfettered truth and love unfeigned. In pursuit of this noble and holy calling I wish you all God-speed.

1837 Raphael Pumpelly (September 8, 1837 – August 10, 1923) was an American geologist and explorer.
From 1870 to 1871, he conducted the geological survey of the copper region of Michigan, for which he prepared "Copper-Bearing Rocks," being part ii of volume i of the Geological Survey of Michigan (New York, 1873). He was called upon in 1871 to conduct the geological survey of Missouri, and for three years devoted his energies to that task, preparing "A Preliminary Report on the Iron Ores and Coal Fields," with an atlas, for the report of the Geological Survey of Missouri (New York, 1873).

When the U. S. Geological Survey was established in 1879, Pumpelly organized the division of economic geology, and as a special agent of the Tenth Census he planned and directed the investigations on the mining industries, exclusive of the precious metals, and prepared volume xv of the Census Reports on "The Mining Industries of the United States" (Washington, 1886). From 1879-80, he conducted at Newport, Rhode Island, an elaborate investigation for the National Board of Health as to the ability of various soils to filter spores from liquids and from air.
He became a resident of Newport in 1879, and lived there for 44 years.

In 1879 Pumpelly introduced the idea that the numerous lakes of the Canadian Shield are the result of the creation of basins due to the stripping of an irregular mantle of weathered rock by glacier erosion. This idea was subsequently adopted by Alfred Gabriel Nathorst used it to explain the great number of lakes existing in southern Sweden.

In 1881, he organized the Northern Transcontinental Survey for the Northern Pacific Railroad and published parts of his report in the Tenth Census. This survey collected information concerning the topographical and economic features of Dakota, Montana, and Washington territories. He had charge of this work until its cessation in 1884, and also edited the reports of the survey.

He was appointed the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey, New England branch, in 1884.

1882 Sir Arthur Stanley Eddington 28 December 1882 – 22 November 1944; A Quaker and a WWI consentious ojector, English astronomer, physicist, and mathematician of the early 20th century who did his greatest work in astrophysics. anticipated discovery and mechanism of nuclear fusion processes in stars first to correctly speculate that the source was fusion of hydrogen into helium.
He is famous for his work concerning the theory of relativity.

Eddington wrote a number of articles that announced and explained Einstein's theory of general relativity to the English-speaking world.

World War I severed many lines of scientific communication and new developments in German science were not well known in England. He also conducted an expedition to observe the solar eclipse of 29 May 1919 that provided one of the earliest confirmations of general relativity, and he became known for his popular expositions and interpretations of the theory.
He was also a philosopher of science and a populariser of science. The Eddington limit, the natural limit to the luminosity of stars, or the radiation generated by accretion onto a compact object, is named in his honour.
