ECI started to develop natural gas and dual fuel technology in 1985 and
has worked on over 80 projects, mostly dealing with liquefied gas, with
BNSF.
In 2000, they completed a project creating a 100% compressed natural
gas system for the Napa Valley Wine Train.
ECI recently finished a project for a mountain railroad in Peru where they
implemented a GE dual fuel engine which replaces about 50% of the
diesel fuel with natural gas. The system is a single engine that runs on two modes –
all diesel or dual diesel and natural gas. For the Peruvian railroad,
about the project was mostly about saving a lot of money from fuel cost
savings; clean air was an added benefit. They expect to pay for the
whole project within a year from decreased fuel costs. It was noted
that this type of technology is best applied for switching locomotives
and short runs, as was the case in Peru.

at the docks in Louisiana. Currently in service off the coast of
Trinidad
for Sundowner Offshore, the Rig is powered by three EMD 12 cylinder
645s
fully equipped with ECI dual fuel hardware. The ECI system allows the
rig
to run on well head natural gas, which saves the company $4000 (U.S.)
per
day in fuel cost savings alone. |
